Is a Van Franchise a Good Investment for Someone Who Already Runs a Business?
Most franchise content is aimed at people who want to escape employment. First-timers. People dreaming of being their own boss for the first time.
This article isn’t for them.
This is for people who already run something. A trade business, a service company, maybe several ventures. They’re not looking for a lifestyle change. They want to know whether a van-based franchise makes financial sense and whether the model is built for someone who thinks like an investor, not a dreamer.
So here’s the honest answer.
The numbers first
A YMWAV franchise costs £4,000 to join. The ongoing fee after that is £350 per month. Flat. No royalties. No percentage of your turnover taken as the business grows.
Compare that to almost any other franchise category. Food and beverage franchises typically start at £25,000 and go well above £100,000. Retail franchises carry similar entry costs plus premises costs on top. Health and fitness, £20,000 minimum. A van-based service business is one of the leanest investment models in the franchise market.
The overheads are minimal by design. You need a van, a phone, and someone willing to show up and do the job properly. No lease. No stock. No staff rota on day one. The margin profile on a well-run removal business is strong precisely because the cost base is so low.
Our franchisees typically reach consistent profitability within the first few months. That figure is partly down to the model, and partly because we’re selective about who we take on. We’re not selling territories to anyone who sends us a deposit.
What about the return?
What a franchisee earns depends on where they operate, how many hours they put in, and whether they want to stay as a one-van operation or build a team. It varies, and anyone who quotes you a single guaranteed number is selling something. What we can tell you is how the structure works.
The flat monthly fee means your upside isn’t capped by a royalty model. Every pound you earn above £350 is yours. If you scale to two or three vans, the economics improve significantly because the fixed costs don’t change. It’s one of the few franchise structures where growth genuinely benefits the franchisee rather than the franchisor.
For someone thinking like an investor, the more interesting opportunity is often the territory itself.
YMWAV territories are exclusive. When you take one, no other YMWAV franchisee markets in that area. If you build the brand locally, put the right person in place, and decide to sell further down the line, you’re selling something with genuine local value attached to it. That’s an asset, not just an income stream.
Do you have to be the driver?
No. And several of our franchisees aren’t.
The model was designed for owner-operators, and most franchisees start by driving themselves. That’s usually the fastest route to profitability and the best way to understand the operation before stepping back. But nothing in the structure prevents you from hiring a driver and moving into a management role once you’re established.
If you already run a business, you understand that the key is finding the right person to represent your brand on the ground. The operational side of a removal business isn’t complicated once you understand it. The quality control side is what matters. That’s where our systems help, because the standards, processes, and training are already built. You’re not inventing the culture from scratch.
We’ve had franchisees who were running other businesses from the day they launched and used YMWAV as an additional income stream. It works when you’re organised about the time commitment at the start.
What the YMWAV network looks like from the outside
We launched in January 2024. By mid-2026, we have 66 branches operating across the UK.
That’s meaningful for an investor doing due diligence. It tells you the model is working at scale. It tells you there’s a real network behind each franchisee, not a franchise company with a handful of territories and a nice website. It tells you that the systems have been tested in different towns, different demographics, different competitive environments, and they hold up.
We’re members of the Quality Franchise Association, which requires members to sign a code of conduct. We have 22 industry awards and a 99% five-star rating across the network.
We’ve been scrutinised by prospective franchisees who came in with spreadsheets. We’re comfortable with that conversation.
When it isn’t the right fit
We’d rather tell you this now.
If you want something entirely passive, with no involvement from you or anyone you trust on the ground, a service franchise isn’t it. The quality of the business is directly tied to who shows up and how they treat the customer. That requires someone who cares. Whether that’s you or someone you’ve put in place, it has to be someone.
If you need significant income from day one, the early months require patience. Profitability tends to come quickly by franchise standards, but quickly doesn’t mean instantly.
If you’re planning to buy and exit within the year, we’re probably not the right fit either. We’re building something long-term and we want franchisees who see it the same way.
The short version for someone who’s already done the maths
Low entry cost. Minimal overheads. Strong margins when run properly. A flat fee structure that doesn’t cap your upside. Territorial exclusivity with real resale value. Scalable if you want it to be, manageable if you don’t.
It isn’t passive. But for someone who already knows how to find and manage the right person on the ground, it doesn’t have to consume you either.
If you want to have a proper conversation about the numbers and whether a territory makes sense in your area, we’re happy to do that. No sales process. Just a straight chat.
