Step one: get the van booked before anything else
The most important call to make is the one to your removal company. Not because it’s the most complicated thing on your list, but because availability is the constraint. Everything else you need to organise can flex around the move date. The van cannot.
When you call, have the following ready: both addresses, a rough idea of how much you’re moving (one-bedroom flat, two-bedroom house, or just a few large items), the date you need, and any access complications like narrow streets, upper floors, or no parking.

What you can prepare in parallel
While the van is being sorted, start on the practical list:
Get boxes from a supermarket. Plenty of them will have spares out back if you ask. You don’t need specialist removal boxes. You need boxes.
Pack room by room. Start with the things you use least. Spare bedding, books, seasonal clothes. Leave the kitchen and bathroom for last.
Take photos of your current meter readings before you leave. Note down your council tax reference number and tell them you’re moving. These small admin tasks are easy to forget and annoying to fix later.
If you’re in a rental, check whether you need to be there for a checkout inspection. This affects timing and is worth knowing.
Moving for work: what’s different

Whether there are parking restrictions at either address (we can sometimes get a dispensation but we need notice). Whether anything is unusually heavy or awkward. Whether you’ll have help on the day or whether it’s just you. What time you have access from and until.
