You’ve got a car full of stuff, a nervous student, a parent who’s quietly emotional about the whole thing, and a halls room that turns out to be roughly the size of a large wardrobe. Add a double duvet and a full-length mirror and you’re already making decisions nobody prepared you for.
It doesn’t need to be like that. Here’s how to make it straightforward.
Start with the room, not the stuff
Before you pack a single box, find out the dimensions of the room. Most university accommodation offices publish them, and some even share photos. Knowing whether you’re moving into a 10×10 box room or a slightly more generous en suite changes everything about what you bring.
The most common mistake is packing for a home bedroom and arriving at a student room. A wardrobe that fits perfectly in your childhood bedroom will not fit in a room that also has a desk, a single bed, and a shelf unit the university has helpfully bolted to the wall.
What actually fits in a van (and what to leave at home)

Check the university’s move-in process before you arrive. Most have allocated time slots now to manage the chaos, and turning up outside yours causes problems for everyone. Some have specific unloading bays that need to be pre-booked. Worth five minutes of research.
Pack bedding separately and accessibly. The first night in halls is not the night to be searching through a pile of boxes for a pillow.
