Can a Man With a Van Collect From Facebook Marketplace?

Yes. That’s the short answer.

The longer answer is that this is one of the most common single-item jobs we do, and one of the things people are most surprised to discover we can help with. You find a sofa you love on Facebook Marketplace. Or a wardrobe that’s exactly what you needed. Or a fridge-freezer for a third of what it’d cost new. Then you look at it and think: how on earth am I getting that home?

What kinds of items do we collect?

Pretty much anything that won’t fit in a car.

The most common Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and Gumtree collections we handle are sofas and armchairs, wardrobes and large chest of drawers, washing machines, tumble dryers, and fridge-freezers, dining tables, bed frames, and mattresses, pianos (yes, really), and exercise equipment like treadmills and rowing machines.

If it’s heavy, awkward, or just too big for a hatchback, there’s a very good chance we can collect it for you. We’ve picked up a piano from a third-floor flat. We’ve shifted a solid-wood sleigh bed down a spiral staircase. The unusual ones don’t faze us.

How it works, from start to finish

Step 1: Agree the purchase with the seller

Sort the deal first, then think about logistics. Confirm the item is available, agree a price, and get an address. While you’re at it, it’s worth asking the seller a couple of practical questions: is there parking nearby? Is the item on the ground floor or higher up? You don’t need to solve these things yourself, but having that information ready makes the booking smoother.

Step 2: Book your local branch

Contact your nearest YMWAV branch with the details: what the item is, where you’re collecting from, where it’s going, and roughly what size it is. We’ll give you a fixed quote based on the actual job. No guesswork, no vague estimate that changes later.

For a single-item local collection, most jobs are priced to cover loading, transport, and delivery into your home. If there are stairs at either end, or if you want the item positioned or assembled, just mention it when you book. We’d rather know upfront.

Step 3: On the day

Our lads turn up at the seller’s address at the agreed time. They’ll handle the loading carefully, protect the item properly for transit, and deliver it to wherever you need it, carried in, positioned in the right room, not just dropped at the door.

The seller doesn’t have to do much except be there to hand it over. Most sellers are quietly grateful to have professionals handle the lifting rather than watching the buyer struggle with a corner sofa on a narrow staircase.

Does it work for eBay and Gumtree too?

Yes. The platform doesn’t matter, the item does.

If it’s a large or heavy purchase from any second-hand marketplace, we can collect and deliver it. Some customers also use us for auction house purchases. If you’ve won something at a local auction and need it out before the deadline, we can help with that too.

What if the item is tricky to access at the seller’s end?

This comes up a lot. Item on the first floor. No parking on the street. Narrow front door. A wardrobe that was clearly assembled inside the room and was never meant to leave.

These things do affect the job, and occasionally the price. The best thing to do is pass on whatever access information you have when you book, and we’ll tell you honestly whether it changes anything. There are very few situations we haven’t handled. We’d just rather know in advance than be surprised at the door.

Why not just hire a van and do it yourself?

Some people do, and for simple jobs it can work out cheaper.

But for anything heavy or fragile, it’s worth thinking through properly. White goods are genuinely heavy. Wardrobes fall apart when tilted at the wrong angle. Sofas that “just need a bit of angling” to get round a corner are famous for scratching walls, jamming on banisters, and taking forty-five minutes longer than anyone planned for. Our lads deal with exactly this sort of thing every day. They have the right kit, they know the technique, and they’re not going to throw their back out trying to be a hero.

There’s a practical reason too. If something gets damaged during a self-hire move, your standard contents insurance almost certainly won’t cover it. When we carry it, it’s covered.

A straight note on pricing

Single-item collections are priced differently from full house moves. The main factors are distance (from seller to you), size and weight of the item, and access at both ends. Most local collections are very reasonable, and we’ll always give you a fixed number before anything is booked.
